2025 opens with strong punch of cold air slated to send Florida into a freeze. Here’s what to expect (2025)

Our first of cold fronts has arrived

ORLANDO, Fla. – The HAPPIEST of New Year’s to all of you, as we wander into the new year together Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, we had temperatures on the mild side, but that story is going to change and keep changing as we head toward the first weekend of 2025.

Our first of cold fronts has arrived and continues to spill further south of our viewing area as you’re reading this story. You’ll notice pretty quickly temperatures and especially the humidity in our air dropping from Wednesday into your Thursday and Friday.

By the first weekend of the New Year, we’re looking at pretty cold temperatures to start the day and only “warming” to the upper 50s, low 60s on Saturday.

We will get a bit of a reprieve from the cold temperatures, and one could call this the “appetizer” to the upcoming main course.

There’s been a TON of chatter all across social media. If you have anything in the realm of Instagram, TikTok, X, or even follow occasional weather updates over on YouTube, you’ve probably heard the blaze of folks talking about an absolutely BLAST of Arctic air forecast to come down out of Canada.

Millions will drop well below freezing, and lots will also receive snow. We’re even monitoring trends indicating snow could come down as far south as the central and southern plains maybe scraping into the upper Gulf Coast states.

Florida will indeed get in on the Arctic action as well. Temperatures will absolutely plummet when the first major winter system that’s expected to drag that dense, but shallow layer of arctic air south. This will likely get going into early next week, around Jan. 6.

From there, the cold air will rapidly begin to settle in. Our neighbors up in the Panhandle will likely experience freezing temperatures. Now, where things really ramp up is when you factor in how windy it will be. Arctic air is much drier, and more dense than your traditional polar air that we see flow through our Central Florida viewing area during the winter time.

Combine that with a fairly robust low pressure system, that’s going to force-feed it to us into early next week, and your wind chill is going to be absolutely disgusting. Temperatures will feel WELL-BELOW freezing, with feels-like temps in the LOW TEENS trying to extend their reach into southern GA just to the north of the FL/GA state line.

Now the big question on everyone’s mind, especially with the uproar this data is causing on social media - will there be snow? That’s something we’re working hard to dial in for you all. The models are pinpointing the potential for not one, but two pretty powerful low pressure waves. The first generating somewhere in the central to southern plains, before ripping eastward.

The second could form as far south as the northwest Gulf of Mexico, which could bring down enough moisture and cold temperatures to try and produce a few flurries. Central Florida will not see much of this at all, we’ll still be in the rainy sector of it. But, that’s not to say extreme northernmost Florida and the southeast US could see a little bit of snow.

With the transition between rain and snow, we’re also monitoring hazardous icing and freezing rain conditions. So lots to cover over the next 5-7 days, stick with your Pinpoint Weather Team for updates as we get closer and closer to the first EXTREME cool down of the new year. Makes you wonder if this is setting the stage for more big time weather events as we rock through 2025.
